What is Agile Development?

Agile Development is the general name given to several iterative and incremental software development methodologies. Each of the methodologies is an attempt to ameliorate problems that we have all experienced with traditional development approaches.

Agile is based on the assumption that no software development or project management technique addresses every issue that will be faced in the course of a project and that the process will give you opportunities to adjust to these realities.

It is the use of light but sufficient processes by a team of business and technical experts who communicate daily to deliver tested solutions that provide business value.

There are three variables in all software development projects: cost, schedule and scope. Historical attempts to define cost and schedule by predetermining scope (usually in the well-defined requirements document) have met with limited success. Agile Development addresses these issues by using light weight development methodologies to adaptively manage evolving requirements while spending time and dollars on the highest value development.
